Utilities and Household Services

Water and wastewater services: Call 748-1291. Chesterfield County provides water and wastewater services. No deposit is required, but an initial fee will be charged on your first bill.

Trash collection: Private contractors (listed in phone book) provide weekly residential trash pickup. The county provides an every-other-week collection. Click here for more information or call 748-1297.

Bulky waste: Collection of bulky items, such as furniture or appliances, is available. Call 748-1297.

Leaves: Collection of bagged leaves is provided on a weekly basis with the purchase of yard-waste tags. Leaf burning is prohibited in most of the county. For more information about leaf burning, please call the Fire and Life Safety Division at (804) 748-1426.

Recycling: The curbside recycling program is available to every single-family home in the county.
For more information, call (804) 340-0900. Collection containers are located throughout the county for drive-up and drop-off recycling of glass containers, mixed paper, aluminum and newspaper.

Animal tags: Must be purchased for dogs older than 6 months, with certification of rabies vaccination. For households with three or more dogs, special zoning and fees are required. For more information, call 748-1201.

County Registrations, Taxes and Fees

Automobiles: Vehicles must be registered within 90 days after moving into Virginia or the county. For more information, call 748-1281.

Personal property taxes: Personal property taxes are due on June 5 of each year. County decals must be displayed by June 26. For more information, call 748-1201.

Real estate taxes: Real estate taxes are due and payable in two equal payments on June 5 and Dec. 5 of each year. For more information, call 748-1201.

Voter registration: Voter registration is available year-round at 9848 Lori Road. Office hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. For more information, call 748-1471.

Building Permits: Permits are required for erecting, or altering, a structure; enlarging finished space; and adding or installing new plumbing, gas, electrical or mechanical systems. Examples include construction of decks, porches, swimming pools, Florida rooms, sheds more than 150 square feet, carports and gazebos and the placement of mobile homes, finishing of unfinished space; installation of new wood stoves, gas logs, new central heating and air conditioning equipment; replacement of electrical panels; and installation of lawn sprinkler systems. Libraries

The mission of the Chesterfield County Public Library is to bring people and information together in a cost-effective manner so that citizens may enrich their own lives. The library encourages and fosters reading at all age levels, whether for recreation or information, supports education and lifelong learning, and helps citizens obtain information at 10 library locations via books, resource materials, video tapes and the Internet.

Parks

Chesterfield County has more than 30 public parks and offers a variety of recreation programs. For the parks near you, or to be added to a mailing list of programs and activities, call 748-1623. An abundance of woods, wetlands and wildlife may be found at the 810-acre Dutch Gap Conservation Area. It is believed to be the only county-owned conservation area in the nation. Pocahontas State Park also is located in the county.

Historic Landmarks

The 1611 Citie of Henricus, the second permanent English settlement in the New World, provides a glimpse into our nation’s past. Pocahontas was brought here as a captive before marrying John Rolfe. Tobacco was first cultivated here and exported as a cash crop. Other beginnings include: the first hospital, first private ownership of land, first chartered university and the first library. Type of Government

A five-member Board of Supervisors, elected by district, governs Chesterfield County. The board appoints a county administrator, who directs the county's day-to-day operations.
